Collard Family of Wiveliscombe
Collard is derived from "Col", a pet form of the personal name Nicholas, itself coming from the Greek given name "Nikolaos", from "nikan" meaning "to conquer", plus "laos", "people", plus the French suffix "-ad".
The surname dates back to the early 14th Century , and variations in the idiom of the spelling include Colard, Collarde and Couillarde.
The Collard family have lived in Wiveliscombe for 600 years.
An interesting family member, recorded in the "Dictionary of National Biography", was Frederick William Collard (1772 - 1860), a piano-forte manufacturer, who was a partner in the firm of Clementi and Co. from 1800 - 1831, and of Collard and Collard from 1832 - 1860.
A Coat of Arms granted to a family of the name is, on an azure shield, three ladies' heads in fesse between as many fleurs-de-lis gold.

Hannah Collard 1761-1794
Hannah Collard Married William Cox III The Clothier, they ran away to Channel Islands and eloped in 1783. First married 1783 Island of Jersey. The family made them have a second wedding which took place 27 July 1783 in St Andrews Wiveliscombe. St Andrew parish clerks comment: Married previously in Jersey Islands to stop the trouble. William was disinherited by his grandfather will for marrying Hannah. It's difficult to know what the trouble was, but it may have been William Cox's family (the Waldron's & Cox's) appears to have gone to the Independent Church and the Collards went to St Andrews. It may have been that both families were business rivals. There may have been a family feud.
The records from the Wiveliscombe Independent Church were removed by the Bishop of Wells for some reason. Many of these records were destroyed. Four of the records for Hannah and William children's baptisms survived
William Cox III and Hannah (Aka Ann) Collard had 4 children
