Fredrick William Collard 1772-1860
Piano Manufacturer.Fredrick William Collard Child of William Collard and Thomasin Lutley was baptised on Dec. 6, 1772 in Wiveliscombe, Somerset. England and died 1860.
He married Mary Lukey on the 30th November 1799, she was the daughter of Charles Lukey, one of the founders of
Longman, Lukey, & Broderip.
Frederick William Collard and Mary Lukey didn't have any children.
Frederick William Collard left the business to his nephews Charles Lukey Collard and William Fredrick Collard who were the children of his sister Phoebe Collard.
Fredrick William Collard, son of William and Thomasin Collard, was baptised at Wiveliscombe, Somerset, on 6 December 1772 (Parish records) , and coming to London at the age of fourteen, obtained a situation in the house of Longman, Lukey, & Broderip, music publishers and pianoforte makers at 26 Cheapside.
In 1799 Longman & Co. fell into commercial difficulties, and a new company, consisting of John Longman, Muzio Clementi, Frederick Augustus Hyde, F. W. Collard, Josiah Banger, and David Davis, took over the business, but on 28 June 1800 Longman and Hyde retired, and the firm henceforth was known as Muzio Clementi & Co. After some time William Frederick Collard was admitted a partner, and on 24 June 1817 Banger went out. On 24 June 1831 the partnership between F. W. Collard, W. F. Collard, and Clementi expired, and the two brothers continued the business until 24 June 1842, when W. F. Collard retired, and F. W. Collard, then sole proprietor, took into partnership his sister Phoebe Collard's sons, Charles Lukey Collard, and William Fredrick Collard.
After 1832 the pianos which had long borne the name of Clementi began to be called Collard & Collard, and many patents were in course of time taken out for improvements both in the action and the frame of the instruments. The firm soon gave up the business of music publishing, and confined themselves to pianoforte making, except that they had also the contract for supplying bugles, fifes, and drums to the regiments of the East India Company until 1858, when the government of India was transferred to the queen. About this time a novelty was brought out, which was suggested by an article in Chambers's Journal, a piano of the cottage class styled pianoforte for the people, which was sold in considerable numbers. To the Great Exhibition of 1851 Collard sent a grand, for which the musical jury awarded the council medal, but this award was not confirmed, owing to some feeling of jealousy.
With his brother William Frederick, they became joint owners of the Muzlo Ciementi and Co. piano manufacturing firm when Clementi retired.
The firm suffered twice from large fires; on 20 March 1807 the manufactory in Tottenham Court Road was burnt to the ground, and on 10 Dec. 1851 a new manufactory in Oval Road, Camden Town, was entirely destroyed.

Collard & Collard Pianos
The illustrious Collard & Collard Piano Company was originally established as 'Longman & Broderip' in 1767. Longman & Broderip was a music publishing house, but the firm also built a number of pianos and organs. The first listing for Longman & Broderip was at 26 Cheapside, London, later at 15 Haymarket, London. The famous composer and piano virtuoso, Muzio Clementi (whose music was published by Longman & Broderip) invested heavily in the firm, ultimately creating an association with F. W. and W. P. Collard under the name of 'Clementi & Company'. Because of Clementi's fame and fortune, the firm was very successful and grew at a rapid pace. F. W. Collard was also a mechanical genius, and he was awarded several patents for piano design and construction, and instruments by the firm were a sensation across Europe. Muzio Clementi retired by 1815 and the name of the firm was changed to 'Collard & Collard'. During the middle 19th Century, the firm was managed by Charles Lukey Collard, and he continued to move the firm to the forefront of piano manufacturing in Europe, making Collard & Collard one of the most popular and successful European piano manufacturers of all time. In 1929, the firm was sold to the Chappell Piano Company of London, and the Collard & Collard name was produced until about 1960. http://antiquepianoshop.com/online-museum/collard-collard/

Very few of these special ordered pianos were constructed by Collard & Collard. Only two are known to have existed in Mexico, this one and another almost identical one (with small variations in the exterior brocade) which was ordered by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte III for his “cousin,” Mexican Emperor Maximillian of Austria and his wife, Empress Carlota. The later is currently on exhibit in the National Museum of History in Chapultepec Castle, Mexico.
Rare Art Cased Upright Piano by Collard and Collard - 1880. The use of naturalistic carving and beveled panels, with the keyboard supported on turned columns, on this piano shows how exotic styles influenced the design of Victorian domestic furniture. Frederick William Collard was also a mechanical genius, and he was awarded several patents for piano design and construction, and instruments by the firm were a sensation across Europe. On attaining the title from his father, Lord Breadalbane instructed the distinguished Collard and Collard, a company at the forefront of piano manufacturing in Europe in the 19th century, to build him an instrument unsurpassed in its quality. It was intended as a gift for his daughter, Lady Eva Campbell. It was constructed from burr walnut imported from Sicily and carved all over with designs supplied by the Earl including heraldic devices of the Campbell family; sets of his children's initials; a boar's head, which is part of the coat of arms of the Campbells of Breadalbane and a heart pierced by an arrow, which appears in the Campbell of Glenfalloch coat of arms. John Alexander Gavin Campbell, (1824-1871) was a Captain in the 1st Royals. It took Collard & Collard two years to construct the piano due to the profuse amount of stunning wood carving and when it was delivered in 1868, it was accompanied by a bill of £2,000, the equivalent of £150,000 today.
